For centuries, the house has been part of the Sheffield landscape. Tapton Hall’s distinguished history has seen it serve as a home to great names and bear witness to great events. The building has been woven into the history of Sheffield since the eighteenth century. Tapton Lodge was the home of the Shore family. Mary Shore was the grandmother of Florence Nightingale who was accustomed to visiting the house.
1855
The Sheffield steel master, Edward Vickers, built Tapton Hall on the same site and in 1867, it became the home of George Wilson, the famous Snuff manufacturer.
1965
By 1965, Sheffield Masonic Hall Company had acquired the house, completely refurbished it, and in 1967 added the architect designed extension with its distinctive custom-sculpted entrance facade.
